Well, I test streaming on internet-enabled blu-ray players, and have actually only played blu-ray discs a couple of times, but the picture has always been excellent. Serenity is one of the movies I have played.
I hope you are using HDMI cable and not component. You may be able to adjust saturation and contrast on the blu-ray player, it depends on the player. Also, I have only tested well-known name brands, so if your player is not a recognizable brand, it may not be poor quality - time to return it. :-)
