I'll answer with references tomorrow (have an appointment today) but long story short, including benefits, Wisconsin's average teacher salary is $78,000 per year, which is one of the highest in the US. Base salary there for a starting teacher is the 2nd lowest in the country, but 20th out of 50 for teachers who hve worked for 10 years or more. It's more complicated than that, because each county has its own schedule. In California last year, teachers negotiated a series of unpaid days off which resulted in about an 18% cut in take-home pay.
Bottom line: Wisconsin public employees can afford to pay what the new law would require. They won't starve or lose their homes (unless they were losing them already thanks to the greedy banks).
