I took Am-Scray on an extended trip from Denver to the 1992 Worldcon in Orlando, stopping for about 2 days each in DC and NYC. Let's just say by the time I got back home, they needed a giant fork to separate me from the other sardines, and perhaps I gained a better understanding of the holocaust. I have not been back on a long-distance train since, and even recoil at taking commuter trains necessary to travel to East coast cons.
I'm thinking about trying to hang on to some of the money I get when I sell my mom's condo, and use it for an extended trip through Europe in 2014, assuming London wins the Worldcon bid. I'm thinking about planning a trip using rail passes, to see, among the things I missed on previous trips, Ireland, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Austria and perhaps stop by Greece for lunch. I wonder if the rail passes include some of the East now? The Eurailpass didn't, but that was 1978 and things may have changed. It was cold in the north in October/November when I was there before, so I turned around at Denmark and used most of my 2 month pass in the 4 big countries of the south. My plans to go by train through the Arctic Circle were utterly defeated. Now, I own down parkas. I was fairly ignorant back then.
I sent a FB message about the photos. Sorry we never had lunch. I kept passing an interesting-looking Thai joint in front of the Super-8 on Virginia, and tried to go there with a friend on Sunday. Who ever heard of a Thai restaurant being closed on Sunday? We wound up with grilled macaroni.
