I remember my teacher talking about photographing the moon once. He pointed out that it is actually like photographing in bright daylight--which is what the moon is illuminated by.

Try using daylight settings--ISO of about 100, F11 and a shutter speed of 1/125. This will give you clarity of detail and not just a big white ball.
