The rest of the world hates us because previously it was cheap and easy to dump American "culture" on their shores. I don't know what you're complaining about if the customer is willing to pay the exorbitant shipping price. I personally do not ship outside the US for a number of reasons, including the USPS's return to the archaic multi-layer customs forms.

Discontinuing overseas parcel post is a huge WTF, though. But I understand why they did it - ships these days only want to carry profitable cargo, and there are no laws which require them to take mail. There are such laws for US registered aircraft, and Fedex and UPS are forced to add USPS to their customer base. USPS owns no ships or aircraft.

As for worldwide illiteracy, I have contributed books to several overseas projects my Peace Corps alumni friends have organized. They always seem to find a way to get the books delivered. Most of those go to Africa, where there are still some English-speaking countries.
