The layovers thing was what that agent did for me in 2010. When I priced it out online the layovers made the trip way more expensive. She got me a flight to Melbourne with layovers in Honolulu, Auckland, and Tahiti on the way back, for less than what I could find on Expedia for a RT to Melbourne with no stops.
