Thanks. That explains it. Not a big shame because they had run out of story lines and were resorting to increasingly convoluted "small world" contrivances. And it was clear the writers wanted to make the atheist Find God™. OTOH the cast is stellar, and mostly People Who Are Not White®. Hope they find other work.
