Thanks for the Clue. Most of the best directors ignore the stage directions - to better match the venue. But from your insider's view, I can see this time it was for the worse.
Can I try to change your mind about greeting the audience? The Mystery, for me at least, lasts until I'm out of costume and makeup. It's the audience's chance to meet your character, up close and personal. I was absolutely livid when the Jekyll & Hyde SM wouldn't let us meet & greet in costume - so I didn't go out unless I knew someone. And the audience also wants to tell you as an actor how much they appreciate your work - if they didn't like your performance, they'll usually just not say hello. At Coastal Rep you're out of the main traffic flow, you're not intruding on anyone.
Let me know when you're on stage again, I truly enjoy your acting.
