Great minds think alike. Since I work pretty close by - near the amphitheater - I drove there after work. They were out of female bettas. The nice young man said they were not stocking them as much any more because "they aren't very robust".
Female bettas are very hearty critters, so what's probably happening is the suppliers are shipping them out too young. And I'm also seeing an alarming bit of misinformation being handed out by the betta sellers, that these fish live well at room temperature. This is true if the room is in Bangkok, but they are kind of borderline at anything below 70 degrees.
The closed-Wednesdays store had a single female betta, which I bought. They said they had ordered some, but none arrived this week.
