Most of my experince of humanists have been very positive. With some of the "hardcore" atheists that I have bumped into at street fairs and the like the experience hasn't been quite so good, but I blame that more on the quality of street fairs than I do the quality of actual atheists. Besides which, some of my best friends.. :-)
I do remember a very funny campaign a few years ago. One organization had members sneak into hotel rooms and put stickers on all the bibles proclaiming, "Warning! May be hazardous to your intelligence"
