This morning I was able to restore the PC from backups and import the HKLM/software registry. It would not accept the HKCU/software reg file, though. But when I rebooted, it errored out trying to run MS's activation service. So I'm stuck looking at my desktop wallpaper and an error message.
Phoned support, they transferred me to activation support which was useless, the supervisor there referred me to escalated tech support, I phoned them and the support guy walked me through a promising registry hack, but it didn't fix the problem. After an hour it was time to leave and drive to work. His parting suggestion, which he said he would email to me but hasn't, is to run system repair from the installation CD. I'm sure there is a better fix, but I'll probably end up doing that - it takes about an hour.
Easter (and hence Passover) has arrived early this year. I'm so glad I gave up religion.
I'm guessing the cretins who are boycotting LJ will not realize that any drop in activity today will be due to it being Good Friday, which is a holiday for many companies and countries, and many others take the day off.
Put in for two days off in April and reserved flights and rental car to go help Dad getting ready for the parental move. They get the key to the new apartment on the 4/14, but the house won't be sold immediately. Realtors will pack up and dump/donate anything left behind, and as far as me and my sisters are concerned, if we haven't needed it since we moved out 20 years ago, we probably won't miss it. Most of my job will be to visit Mom in the care facility (she is recovering from a small fracture in her hip), and packing up and shipping their photo albums. I need to get a shelving unit for my apartment to stick those in. I almost came up this weekend to fit in Norwescon, but Easter traffic & fares zapped that idea.
Spent some time filling in a draft of my "performance management" doc and sent it to my boss. Moto pulled a fast one on us and completely changed the format from what they had told us in January. It's really a pretty good format, the new one, if the employee is upwardly mobile, and has duties which are predictable over a one-year period. It also helps if the job is in the mainstream of Moto's major product lines.
I'm hoping this will be the job I retire from in 2015, and with an expanding team and not-yet-invented products to test this year which are not in Moto's mainstream, the format is mostly N/A.
No plans for tonight, maybe I'll find a show to go to. Nails tomorrow, nothing planned for Sunday. Maybe there's a full moon/springtime festivity to attend? Hints welcome.
