I'd rather have my fingernails pulled out one by one while being waterboarded by a sadistic Abu Ghraib guard with a dog leash and a strap-on than go to a "holiday" party.
If I had a sizeable sum of money, I would be prepared to bet it that in a simple either-or situation you really wouldn't.
And yes, all that you say is true. Also crass profiteering, charity scams by homophobic organisations like the Sally Army, and a steep rise in the mortality rate among little match girls. But it's going to happen anyway, and some people, maybe only a few, are going to feel better because of it. And in these days, when as you say there is more poverty and strife in the world than ever, if something helps people get through the day without in itself making things worse, I'm for it.
