On closer look, it was newly hatched fry, which I'd been kind of expecting because the pair of Jeweled Ciclids in the tank had been displaying major nesting behavior and were turning deeper brighter colors.
Jewels are excellent parents, both of them took turns protecting their young from the large and aggressive auratus which lives in the other side of the tank. But just in case, I put my breeder pen in there and scooped up about 50 of the kiddies. I have baby food (it's a fine powder) so put some in there, as well as some of the fine moss they can hide in.
The betas in the other tank have had a bubble nest for a couple of weeks, and I thought they would be the first to hatch babies, but so far nothing.
