Oh Yeah, It was the 4th

howeirdWestercon critique ate my brain so much I forgot that I started the morning at Shoup Park in Los Altos, playing with Ye Olde Towne Band at the annual 4th of July gathering. It seemed expanded this year, with lots of game booths for the kiddies (including a dunk tank featuring a former local school teacher as the target) Armadillo Willy's hogged the very small parking lot with their mega catering truck, selling lunch-like objects.
It was hard to tell the turnout, since people were spread out around the whole park, which is about 80 yards wide and maybe 200 deep. We had a small but appreciative crowd parked in front of us.
We played all the usual patriotic pieces. We did Stars & Stripes Forever straight, a week ago Sunday we did it with our petite female tuba player playing the piccolo part, but she looks to be about 8 months along, so I was not surprised to not see her there today.
One thing I appreciated which I think a lot of people didn't pick up on, is when the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, the man leading it did not say "under god". He paused while some of the audience said it. He is of an age that he learned it without that noxious phrase.
The schedule said we would be done at 11:42, which was a joke when the conductor pointed this out to us, but by golly we were done by 11:42, give or take a minute.
Went home to change and grab a very quick snack, then to SJ for Westercon, free parking in the garage for the holiday.
Back home, finished filling out the paperwork for the contract job. Will meet the recruiter Wednesday and give it to her then.
Plans for later today:
Blow off all my eBay obligations (they can wait a day) and go to the beach. Maybe do some fishing at Pacifica Pier.
