Someone to Watch Over My Butt

This is for leatherapron, but anyone who knows, feel free to chime in:

Two of my favorite Gershwin tunes are But Not For Me and Someone To Watch Over Me. Judy Garland sang the first one in Meet Me in St. Louis and I know the other one from the musical Oh Kay! and Frank Sinatra albums. I would love to have a recording of Judy singing both of them, but have been unable to find Someone in a cursory search - did she ever record that number?

Hi there,

I will go through my albums this weekend. I think I may have a copy of her singing it. The only problem is it is on a bootleg LP. I am not sure, but I will let you know. I think if you go to the online Judy Garland data base they can tell you.

Don't look for, "Not for me." on the St. Louis soundtrack. It was for another film :-)

Thanks for the clue - I never thought about there being a JG database. Found it, and they say But Not For Me is from Girl Crazy which is a CD I was planning on buying anyway, and she only sang Someone at a probably-never-broadcast Hollywood Democratic Party dinner honoring Harold Ickes in 1944. I guess it's not too surprising, she never was one for the "woe is me" genre of torch song. But it's a good one for her voice.

It is a good one.

The data base is really good and sometimes the Judy room is pretty good too.

Do you have a turntable? Sometimes rare concerts made their way onto bootleg LP's and these can sometimes be tracked down at thrift stores.

Yup, I have a turntable, and it's hooked up to the computer. That's how I got that Alan Sherman song for hobbit-jedi girl a few months ago. You're too young to remember, but I lived through the period when $8 vinyl suddenly disappeared from record stores, being replaced almost overnight by $20 CDs. Lots of my favorite albums got caught in the transition, and the only way I could get some of those tracks was to copy the LPs. Unfortunately, I had given away my massive LP collection to earthquake relief in 1989, so if there's anything I want, I have to hunt up a vinyl seller. I've found a few good ones online, so that's not such a big problem. And now the industry is catching up, a lot of those LPs which fell through the cracks are finding their way onto CD. I'm also set up to snag sound tracks from VCDs, run them through an audio editor and make CDs from them. That's how some of my Lea Salonga collection came to be.
