In Dark Tower 7, King dredges up a term he must have just recently discovered, which annoys the hell out of me. It's the phrase mit schlag which he claims is the way hot cocoa should be made - he says it means "with cream on top".

He's wrong on so many levels it's amazing.

First of all, "schlag" is German for "slam. wham, smack" and I'm guessing it's slang for whipped.

Second, it's mocha, not cocoa which is the drink which comes mit schlag. Cocoa gets marshmallows, as everyone on the northeast coast knows.

And "mit schlag" is not a common phrase in NYC, which is where King is using it as if it's from there.

And it just does not match the tone of the other non-standard verbiage in the series.

It's annoying.

In Austria, "schlag" is in fact the term used for whipped cream. You can get an "eis kaffee mit schlag/ohne schlag" which is espresso poured over vanilla ice cream with/without whipped cream. It's thicker than cheap whipped cream out of a bottle, and oh so tasty.

And I prefer whipped cream on my hot cocoa instead of marshmallows. I can't stand the texture of marshmallows unless they've been singed on the outside and the insides are all gooey.

Oh, and btw, the full term is "schlagobers". Needless to say, the short version sounds much more appetizing.

I prefer whipped cream to marshmallows in my cocoa anyday.

I prefer marshmallows as a component in s'mores.
