Some Words About Bullying

I was bullied all through grade school, junior high, and until my junior year in high school. I was always the youngest and smallest in my grade school classes until I was about 12, then I became the chubby kid, still the shortest. There were lots of bloody noses, bruises and scrapes, and lots of times getting home way late after school.

I didn't kill myself.

Never even considered it.

Back when we went to school, parents didn't sue the school district because we got beaten up on a regular basis.

Now, educators can't even break up fights without calling the cops first. And we all have to go through sensitivity training because Bullying is Bad, Mmkay?

Bullying is bad. I don't think it is preventable. Building victims' self-esteem can help prevent suicides, I think, far more than any punishment of the bullies.

When I went to school it was not rare for an older brother to beat the crap out of a bully. I didn't happen to have one of those.

I used to get bullied by boys at school from 6th grade through high school, and beaten up by my father at home. I'm so glad both of these things are actually being taken seriously these days.
