About 3 am I hear a THUNK and see Jade's room light is on, which means she had tripped the sensor near the gate. But the noise was Spook jumping off the bed, and instead of sitting at attention facing the gate, she was on her back, fluffy tummy up, trying to seduce Jade, who was crouched by the new water fountain, putting up a low growl. After a while Spook gave up and ducked just out of sight. And eventually came back to bed.
Around 6 am, my symptoms got less urgent, and I did wake up with the 8 am alarm.
After my morning routine I checked online and found the invoice for my first keypad installation. $678 for parts, $598 of that was the keypad deadbolt. Double check at Home Depot and it retails for $106. I filled out the comment section that I was severely overcharged, with details. Got a response in less than an hour that the comment was to the company which does the accounting, she will have the technician call me.
He did, but he was making lame excuses, such as "I showed you how to program it" - bogus because there was a separate labor fee of $179 for that. And as if I can't follow the directions myself. He was going to talk to his boss and call me back but I haven't heard from him.
Took a cutter to the carpet around the fireplace valve. Two problems: the rod for turning the gas on is just barely long enough, and the valve was stuck. This is dangerous because the valve needs to be opened very slowly to avoid an explosion and loss of eyebrows. I got lucky and managed to finesse it just right.§§

Wasted a lot of time on Twitter, much of it was because I follow Seanan McGuire. She posts a lot. And she does serial posts because of Twitter's character limit. Today's rant was something I am very familiar with: people with unpredictable disabilities. She is one. Sometimes things hurt a little and she uses a cane, sometimes she needs a wheelchair or a scooter. She is really pissed when she gets up from a
wheelchair or a scooter and someone shouts "It's a miracle!". I've known her a long time, and she has an outstanding sense of humor, but I guess this particular line gets old. I've kept quiet on Twitter about this, because Seanan is a miracle. Or would be if I believed in them. Nothing to do with her physically, she has a brilliant mind, is a best selling author, singer, songwriter, artist and just fun to be around.
§§ After watching PTI by the fireplace, something about the fire seemed wrong. So I shut it off, let it cool down for an hour, got out a flashlight and checked the flu. Yup, it was closed. Instead of pushing the lever toward the back, it opens when the lever is pulled toward the front. That changed, not a lot improved. I think I need to move the whole assembly to the back of the fireplace. Meanwhile I ordered a valve rod that's 24" to replace the 18-incher.
It rained all day. Lots of dark low clouds. Very much like Seattle, but the clouds are too low and the wind is 30 MPH. And only two hundredths of an inch of total rainfall.
Late afternoon when I went out to the porch to tie a rocker to the rail to keep it from blowing away, there was a package on the floor from King Size. Shirts which were at least 2 weeks late.
Did a load of t-shirts and shorts.
Hgl at 8 pm was high, and a try at cup of noodles for dinner failed, too much liquid built up in my chest. So I shut the PC, took meds and went to bed. Fired up a 1st responders channel on Twitch on the tablet and almost got to sleep. Spook joined me, with time out to harass Jade.
After 2 hours the ambulance chaser went home to cook dinner, I was feeling rested and wanted to journal. So here I am. A bowl of Breyer's chocolate ice cream and the rest of Thursday Night Football lies ahead.
Tomorrow:
Follow up on the lock overcharge
Push the fireplace assembly back toward the wall & light it
Look online for T-shirts with a pocket, made from normal T-shirt material, not the lightweight stuff from my last order
