"Crocodile Hunter" has died in what is being labeled a "freak accident" by the media, which is a polite way of saying he got careless. I did not like Irwin, his abrasive manner, his habit of taunting domesticated "wild" animals, his unabashed self-marketing. But I definitely did not want to see him dead.
On the one hand, he brought the world a broader awareness of the amazing variety of life on this planet. On the other hand, once he showed you these animals he proceeded to go all macho Alpha Male Human on them. I suspect his childish self-image of indestructibility is what got him in the end. But maybe not - I wasn't there and have not seen the video, and have been on enough dives to know that someone else's stupidity could have been to blame.
