Lazy Sunday

Spent some time this morning downloading and installing new drivers for the new motherboard. The new BIOS added a feature I had become find of with the ASUS - the auto-start which boots the machine up at about the same time my alarm goes off in the morning, so by the time I'm up and showered and dressed Windows is loaded and my email is slurped up and ready to be read.

Thought about going to a movie, kind of want to see Pursuit of Happy-ness but then I remembered the NFL playoffs at 1.

I'm curious... why do you turn off the computer at all? Energy savings? Or some other reason?

Several reasons. First is the fact that Windows has a problem releasing memory when a program is closed, so the longer you go without rebooting, the more likely you are to have a frozen PC. Second is the wear on the four hard drives. Third is the amount of power this heavy-duty PC draws. And finally, any electrical device is a fire hazard, especially one which is drawing as much power as this one.

If Windows had a hibernate mode which was reliable, I'd use it. But most of the time PCs I've tried this with have failed to come back up all the way without a reboot.
