I don't really understand a lot of your poll options, because they seem to imply that liking SteamPunk as a genre involves wanting to make steampunk costumes, which I don't.
But the genre is fun to read and watch movies from, and look at other people's costumes, so that's cool.
I would only go to a con with such a narrow focus if it was awfully convenient, but please understand that that's true of me regardless of how much I enjoy the focus in question.
I've always rather liked the idea of purely mechanical solutions to complex problems that we tend to solve today with electronics.
I like even more the idea of such rube-goldberg devices at, say, a Ren Faire being used to mechanize a process beyond the manner of the time, but well within their technological means.
The idea that if you had only those physical resources, but all of our modern ideas... what would you do?
