Red Sun

This one's for iamradar. Taken at 6:24 AM on 6/24/08 at the Sacramento train station. The last time I saw a sun blocked like that was in the aftermath of the Mt. St. Helens eruption, and befoe that in the dust bowl of Northeast Thailand's summer, when the rice paddies dry up and blow away.

Down here in Silly Valley the smoke has not been so bad, or maybe I'm just doing better drugs.

We had a sunset that red late last week. It was the most apocolyptic sun I have ever seen. I don't remember if post-Helens showed me sunsets that red, but if it did down here, I don't remember it.

When St. Helens blew up the first time, I was in Seattle, and the second time I was coming back to Seattle from Eastern Washington, either on Hwy 12m which goes between Mt. Rainier and St. Helens, or more likely on I-84 along the Columbia River south of the mountain, which is where the ash fell the most the second time around.
