I've done some voice-over work, and strange but true, some of the early gigs came because I was the studio engineer and the talent didn't show up. But my big ones were from being in a theater group. When I moved to the Bay Area I went to a TBA event and talked to a few voice-over agencies about moonlighting, but they said the studios were strictly 9-5, M-F thanks to the union, and I did not have a day job which would let me take random time off nor was I wealthy enough.
But yeah, it's always fun to see the face in front of the voice.
