Our family is lucky in that we were in company Kaiser plans and were allowed to stay in Kaiser. Otherwise, both Big Harold and I would be uninsurable. He has major pre-existing conditions. Mine are minor, but still could make me unwanted. It is a bit of comfort to know that we wouldn't be completely SOL if we had to leave Kaiser now. Until now we could never even consider leaving Northern California, period. And our Real Income is small. There are some variables, but I may be eligible for Insurance Assistance when that becomes available. We are currently paying 1/2 of our Real Income in Health Insurance Payments right now. The abused 401K would appreciate the decrease in the drain. So yeah, I was looking specifically at those parts of the bill. But it is sausage and it smells like it. But so does a lot of other important legislation. Hold the nose and go forth!
I'll have to read the final law, but my understanding is it doesn't go into effect until 2014. My Kaiser COBRA plan runs out well before then, pre-existing conditions and all. If I'm lucky, my contract will be converted into full time employee with only a small gap between.
