The day started out fine, with me rushing to make it to the library by 10 for a talk/showcase of all-electric cars. There was a line to get in the front door. Huh? Turns out the library opens at 10, the talks started at 10:30. The format was a multiple panels thing, which was done somewhat ineptly. They had four panels of 5 people each, each person was given a chance to pour their heart and soul out about their particular EV. So instead of finishing at 11:30 it took 2 hours. It would have worked a lot better (for me) if, instead of using every volunteer, they had designated one person per model.

There were two glaring common denominators to the panelists:
1. They were all over 40
2. They all owned a house (which gave them the opportunity to go solar and get paid to charge the car)

I'm now in that demographic, and my days of driving to Seattle or LA are done, so I'm in that demographic, except my roof won't support solar panels and part of the lease requires me to stay on the grid (the park provides our electricity & gas feeds).

Two of the women on the panel were so jazzed about their cars that they are now working for the dealership selling them. Both were at the point of "retire or 3rd career?"

I just bought my Corolla in May, but maybe it's time to look into an EV. After the talk we went to the parking lot where all the panelists had their cars on display, plus a couple of models which had been parked by dealers but not represented by a human. Talking with the folks and looking at the cars, the Nissan Leaf looks like a good fit for me. Hybrids don't have enough trunk room because they have two engines and a battery pack and a gas tank. But pure electrical cars only have the smaller electric engine and the battery pack is in a less obnoxious location. There were a couple of Rav4s, but they are too big and ugly as a brick. Some of the other models are more like enclosed golf carts. I was telling one guy that I needed something my baritone horn would fit in, and he plays bass so he knows that's not a problem.

The initial price might be a show-stopper, but my Corolla is new enough to get almost as much back as I paid for it. Maybe more because they gave me a generous trade-in. Hmmm.

While at the talk, I used Great Clips' app to "check in". By the time I got there, it had expired. But it didn't matter because checking in does nothing for you. You still have to wait in the order that you physically arrived. Inept. Which for me was 25 minutes. Very inept. More inept was the trainee at the check-in. Okay, Plan B was to chill out at Starbucks in the Safeway next door but inept cashier was arguing (politely) about a customer trying to use a Safeway coupon. As it turns out, they don't accept Starbucks apps, they are on Safeway's register system. Customer decided to pay for an armful of groceries there. I walked out.

This store has a set of tables and chairs with umbrellas, which kept them dry. They are tolerant of homeless folks parking there all day, and there was some interesting chat by a woman telling a friend all about her morning appointment with the psychologist. When she was done I wandered back to wait another 10 minutes for the haircut. The list got confused because one guy came in with his son, and the trainee couldn't understand that he woud skip his turn so he could watch the kid, and then get cut by the same barber.

Next stop was Kaiser, to pick up some insulin and test strips and load up on B&D alcohol swabs. But there was a long, slow line and I needed to pee, which reminded me I was due for my quarterly lab tests, and one of them was pee-in-the-cup. The lab was almost empty, now serving 41 and I was 43. That all went well, but the line at the pharmacy was a prime example of inept layout and staffing. Huge banners all over proclaim that they will ship your prescription for free if you order online, but it ignores three things:
They won't ship insulin
They won't ship OTC items
It can take 2 weeks to get the stuff they do ship
Inept.

Half an hour later I had my items, and went to the Starbucks across the street, where they were very ept, and there was a place to sit and read (the tables are too small for a laptop and mouse), and there was some eye candy from Kaiser but more from the Korean supermarket.

Weather was still blustery and intermittently raining, so I went home. Pulling out of the parking lot, I tried to use the split screen in the backup camera, and found that the Kenwood had forgotten it could do that. When I got home I re-updated the firmware, which seemed to fix it, but it forgot after 5 minutes.

While I was messing with it, I went back inside, went online and found instructions on Garmin's site on how to upload points of interest (POI) from files I'd backed up on the PC. Followed the directions, but instead of adding POIs it erased the entire map and all its built-in POIs. I tried to do and "update maps" but it insisted I had the latest map.

I emailed support, but they will probably want me to buy a map SD card for $100. Meanwhile, one more reason to get a Leaf. It has a really nice GPS, and the woman who became a salesperson played classical music on its sound system, and it sounded great.

One other chore I did was once again unfurl the flags. The American flag keeps winding itself around the pole, and the Thai flag makes one loop before it is stable. Tomorrow I'll that the pole down and store it and the flags until the weather calms down. I shouldn't be flying them in the rain, anyway.

Dinner was in two parts. A snack of roasted corn chowder, and later ravioli in Alfredo sauce with mixed veggies.

Plans for tomorrow:
Nothing in the morning
noon-ish, slog to the light rail and take it downtown, meet Janice to see an all-female cast production of 1776. I frankly did not like the two productions I've seen, and probably will like this one even less, but the level of talent is amazing, I have been on stage one place or another with more than half the cast.

Warmday. Today was warm, almost hot. Saturday was Hotday.

Up early, at work early after checking from home via VPN that there was no reason to come in early. I just was ahead of schedule, and when I got to work I found out why. I had forgotten to pack a banana and string cheese in my cooler. I did have two small bottles of diet Coke, a small tub of natural peanut butter, cut up celery stalks, fig newtons, a few slices of turkey bologna and some slices of American cheese, so all was not lost.

At work all I really needed to do was poke the machines we have been testing all last week, and tell the boss a couple of times "we already did that, it made no difference".  My partner in crime was given a hardware challenge, which meant I had to pause my monitoring program until that was done (it would say rude things if it could not find her machines).

Lunch started with a trip to Petco where four $5 rewards coupons got me a free case of Fancy Feast, a large package of cat chewie treats and for another $5 I added a pouch of litterbox deodorizer.

Then next door to Pizza Hut, which wins this year's Most Unmotivated Employees award. They were having their lunch when I walked in. All three of them. One sauntered over to take my order and then went back to lunch. My pizza was done long after her lunch was, she brought it out to me and then disappeared. None of the three were in sight or answered to calls when a customer came in.  I happened to be ready to get the leftovers boxed up, so I yelled, and she eventually came out. Other customer was disappointed that she did that for me without seeming to even see that he was standing there. He left when she turned her back to shove 5 large pieces of pizza into a personal sized box.

Back to work, more of same.

Home, checked the mail - nothing in the mailbox. Large-ish box from Amazon in front of my apartment door, it was a firebox for some of my Official Papers. Safe Deposit boxes are not offered by my credit union, and around here none of the banks have any available.

Planted myself in front of the TV with a glass of iced lime-ade, and watched the Redskins almost save face after having the crap beat out of them in the first 3 quarters by Michael Vick & Co. Also watched some of the Texas-San Diego game, and the bottom of the 9th of the SF Giants' game. It went into extra innings.

Put a few finishing touches on my web site's webcam page.

Ordered a Minnesota Vikings cheerleader calendar to make up for the Saints one I ordered, which is a true 2014 calendar and not one which starts with football season. I may also add a Texas Texans one or  Chargers one. Or not.

And I enrolled in the NFL fantasy football league, but have not chosen players because I have no idea how it is done, and there are no clues on the web site for newbies.

Kaan pooped in the bedroom again. So, no cats in the bedroom, even when I'm home. And I think I'll go back to the crystal litterboxes because the clumping ones are just not working out. Chalk it up to poor design of the poo receptacles and the section which is supposed to hold them in place. Probably not till Wednesday though. If Kaan is going to think outside the box regardless of which ones I use, I may as well used the ones which only need to be paid attention to once a week and don't actively distribute the smell of cat pee.

Plans for tomorrow:
Work. Company picnic, which I will go for the food, but if it's as hot as it has been this week I will bail right after that and be air conditioned at home.

In Short

Played with the Nexus 7. I am very pleased with it.

Accomplished at work what I had set out to finish, and also verified a bug was fixed in today's latest build. It was a fairly complex setup, took about an hour.

Manicure revealed that Michelle (owner and the one who does my armor plating) is a Vietnamese beauty pageant winner. She is gorgeous, and I would love to have her model for me. Two of the other workers are also quite pretty.

Lunch at Dairy Belle, grilled cheese was delicious. But the one and only employee disappeared when I was ready for my chocolate dipped cone. Boo, Hiss.

Home, Kaan pooped on the bathroom rug. I need to remember to keep that door closed when I'm away. Nice to have a washing machine, for events like this.

Band rehearsal, we practiced most of the pieces on the menu for Sunday's concert. Mostly whipped through them, but there was some remedial work because this was the first time we had a full turnout since Summer started. Boss man says this is the best band ever. A large part of this is how big it is, and how very completely the parts are covered. Not many concert bands can boast four tubas or four Euphoniums, or enough trombones to cover every part 3 times over. And we have a killer trumpet section.

I took home my copy of the Carmen suite, it was copied awkwardly, needing two page turns. Scanned it and printed it out so it just needs to be flipped once.

Bought a beater baritone horn on eBay. There were about six which were candidates, but this was the only one with a rotatable bell, and billed as ready to play. I'll sell my 4-valve to Starving Musician if the eBay one lives up to the claims. Shipping cost 1/3 of the total price, but still under $300 which is half what Starving's cheapest goes for. I expect about $800 for my current one.

Time to check my blood sugar level and go to bed.

Yesterday was foo filled at work and when I went home for lunch it was foo filled on the TV news too. But it was good to sit in the recliner with cats.

I went home because there were two packages to pick up at the apartment office. One was something called Wax Vac which was advertised to be a safe way to melt ear wax instead of swabbing it out, and I was hoping to use it to avoid a doctor's appointment to unclog my left ear. But the instructions for the device say it is only for grabbing the wax that's close to the surface, and even then they suggest using a softener first, and say to see a doctor for anything like what I have.

The other item was a major WTF non-delivery, a $10 earbud set which definitely did not have to be sent "signature required".

I didn't really eat lunch, I think I had a pickle and a couple of pieces of chocolate. I was feeling very depressed.

Back at work things didn't get better till about 5 pm, but it will be Monday before we get a fix for the main foo.

After work was dreaded holiday season shopping. I don't do holiday shopping, I don't believe in buying presents just because the Jesus culture says it's required. I was raised by Orthodox Jews, I am allergic to anything related to the elevation of a human to deity status. Even when I did believe in the concept of a Messiah, I didn't believe he was entitled to a do-over. The Bible says he'll bring universal peace. Jesus didn't achieve that while he was alive, or in the 1,000 years his apologists gave him. Even now that I have no faith of any kind, I'm still allergic to this holiday, and elevating the minor mythological holidays of Chanukah and Kwanzaa to the same status is not helping.

But I digress.

First stop was Petco, where I was accosted by row upon row of pet toys in pagan holiday colors of green and red. I had to wait for a pair of chatty employees to finish stocking the canned food who totally blocked the non-denominational cat toy aisle. Found three items which I thought soon-to-be-renamed Milo might enjoy.

Looked at my phone's groc list, I needed celery and bananas, and Safeway app said pasta and Klondike bars were on sale. So, Safeway, got those items plus onion dip for the celery and margarine, which was on sale and I only have one stick left in the freezer. Looked for light whipped cream, but they have changed all their cans to a holiday theme and they all say "made with real cream" which does not strike me as "light". Domino does not like the one I got a couple of weeks ago. Maybe I need to try Lucky's.

Driving back home, I was in the left lane when I passed the produce store, so I took the next U-turn and popped inside to get a few cans of what is now my favorite stuffed grape leaves brand:

I wish they made them with ground lamb instead of only vegetarian, but these are pretty good, bite sized and in a delicious minty sauce.

Home, dinner was a lamb shank and half a can of the dolmathes pictured above. Klondike bars for dessert.

Pet toys had been tossed into the middle of the livingroom, and the big surprise is Milo is not at all interested in the two round objects. He loves the burlap bag of catnip, which was no surprise seeing as how much he loves the catnip banana.

I was still very depressed by the news and the Facebook reaction to it. Tried to take my mind off it by watching the Tivo - all I had on there was the 12-12 concert for Sandy, and I mostly FFed past a screaming Alicia Keyes, and an aging The Who, but listened to most of Billy Joel's very long set which did some clever and artful things with NYC vignettes and gave each of his band members (all of them half his age) some time in the spotlight. They were very good, and were enjoying being part of an epic performance. FFed past the gratuitous wanna-be personalities interviewing New Yawkers for no apparent reason, lookin forward to the Nirvana set with Sir Paul, but Tivo had decided the program ended before that, so I was back to being depressed.

Went to the PC for more FB angst, when I got back to the livingroom, the cats were both on the recliner, a major milestone, so I grabbed the camera and took some photos. Less depressed after that.

Went to bed early, but couldn't sleep. Played with the internet radio to see what the Beeb was saying about the foo in CT, but all their broadcasts were in fru-fru mode: an interview with a doctor doing research on blood oxygen levels, something about winter gardening, a recording which said BBC World Service was off the air and would return at some time GMT. I could not find their Thai broadcast.

Fell asleep somewhere around midnight. 4 am the cats are fighting. Or more accurately, yelling at each other. Milo has started to meow when he's miffed. 7:30 am feels like 5 am, Milo curls up next to me, his head on my arm, purring like an Evinrude.

Foo

I'd set three cloth shopping bags on the floor near the door to take back to the car, when I picked them up I felt something wet. Domino had barfed on them.

Picked up 3 items at the apartment office before going to work. There were two calendars, one in a padded envelope, but the SeaGals one was in a UPS box way too big for it, which had two empty Seahawks boxes inside for filler. Not as big a WTF as it might be, WA has a lot of rural fans whose calendars would have been bent to fit into their mailboxes, better to send UPS and in a box.

Work was major league foo, I left at 12:30 when they took my machine to re-image. Worked from home, but it turns out the machines I'd been planning to log into were in use for another project. I got maybe 2 hours of actual work done.

Milo sort of owns the apartment now, but he's easily spooked. Domino is starting to reclaim her territory, jumping up on my lap when I'm sitting on the recliner. This morning she was up on the bed when Milo was elsewhere. There have been no noises between them this afternoon. He has been trying out the many scratching posts, and unlike any other cat I've ever had, he will hide under the couch throw.

Watched the football game, but when Milo sat on my lap I decided it was time to take pictures for the HSSV center. Could not find my favorite tripod. I know I've had it in this apartment, but it wasn't in either of the closets or the storage room, or in the trunk of the car. So I pulled out my old standby, but it was missing the quick-release mount. For weeks there was a quick-release mount on my desk, but I think I threw it out, knowing there were two in the newer tripod's carrying case.

And I needed the wireless shutter release, which I found, but the battery was dead. It's a weird battery, and I did not have a spare.

So I drove to Fry's down the block, bought batteries, but they did not have a tripod release. They had the same tripod as my favorite on sale for $32, which is not much more than a release costs a la carte, and it comes with two releases, but they were out of stock. San Jose has 5, they said, so I found a freeway and went there, and yup, they had 5, 4 of which had not been pried open by inconsiderate customers. And yes, it was on sale.

8 pm, there were hardly any customers in either store, and only two or three cashiers. Horrible loud tacky Jesus music was blaring both places, I won't be back before 2013.

Missed the best part of the football game, got back just as they were taking a knee for the last time. :-(

The release worked fine on the old tripod, but the shutter release only worked at the camera end, the remote didn't trigger it. The Solmeta GPS I sent back has a wireless release, but that's on its way to China and it will be 2 weeks before I see the replacement. So I ordered another wireless on Amazon.

I even pulled out my D90, which I used to have a remote for, but that remote was not in any of my camera cases. Very frustrating.

I had bought a couple of items at the BASFA auction which I think are worth a lot more than the seller knows. I listed them on eBay, with high reserve prices to see how much people would bid. One of them will probably go to my nephew, and I'll keep the other if (when) nobody bids high enough.

Got some laundry done while I was WFH, maybe I should take it out of the dryer. And hang stuff up. Already washed & dried the shopping bags.

Plans for tomorrow:
Work.
