Domino did a lot of yowling last night, I don't know why. I thought she was getting used to the big house. Woke me a few times. And I woke up early.

Took my time getting going, not much to do. I needed produce and TV dinners. The local grocery is no good for those, or anything for that matter, so I went to the Safeway at Rivermark, which is tied for closest. The other is in the opposite direction and is smaller.

The limes were on sale, larger and fresher than Costco's. Ditto the bananas. Got some huge tangelos too. Most of the frozen dinners were on sale, for very misleading prices. Bought some.

Home, unloaded stuff into the fridge/freezer. Watched the end of the morning football game. Wondered if Janice had changed her mind. She showed up 10 minutes late but there was no score, nothing really to rewind for. She's a lot more demonstrative than I am, but at least we root for the same team.

She's very allergic to cats, so of course Domino spent most of the afternoon trying to get past me to her.

49ers were their usual mediocre self, Green Bay hung right in there till the final second. SF won by a field goal.

Next week is Carolina at their home. They beat SF recently, at SF. I think they are the better team, but it depends on whether both teams show up with all players.

Watching the GoDaddy Bowl, but so far have not seen any sponsor commercials. :-(

Plans for tomorrow:
Work
BCS championship

That's what it feels like, all the recent announcements by conservatives that they have had a change of heart, and now see the rightness of legalizing gay marriage.

It took Obama way too long to see the light. He was not raised a Bible bigot, he chose to become one, and those born-for-the-first-timers can really plant their feet. But he has come around most of the way.
Many of the minds were changed by their children coming out to them. A few managed to on their own finally separate their church from their state. Whatever the catalyst, it feels to me like a big rock being rolled away from the cave entrance, and the hostages coming out. The dawn of a new era. Maybe the dawn of a new ERA as well?

Anyway, all of that to say I have always taken people at face value. The only time I care at all what a person's sexual orientation is is when it's a woman I'm interested in dating. But then, there have been far more women who were not interested in me who were not interested in women, either.

But I digress. This week has given me some hope. I hope the Supes continue that feeling.

Or maybe 4. I had a good night's sleep, which started with both cats curled up on the bed, far enough apart to stay out of trouble. I stayed in bed till maybe 9:30, when I got up they were both elsewhere.

Marilyn called, she wanted to know how she would buy her Amtrak ticket back to Sacramento. The Santa Clara station has no facilities at all. The web site doesn't say a word about that, so I told her she can buy one on board. And I wondered why she had not bought a round trip ticket, since she knew in advance she was coming back by train. But I didn't ask, Marilyn often makes no sense at all. She played my wife in a show at Santa Clara Players and then I directed her in another play there, but she long since sold her house and moved to a Dell Webb community outside of Lincoln, CA, a sub-suburb of Sacto.

I picked her up at noon at the old Victorian mansion where she was staying, it belongs to one of the more ancient members of the SC Players. I've been there before but it's always impressive. We all chatted for a while then M & I went to lunch, I took her to a place we used to go after rehearsals which was close to her house back then. At the time it was a failing Chinese restaurant with few customers, and we figured it had to be a front for a drug tong, because they obviously weren't paying for the place with legitimate business. Now it is an amazingly successful and very noisy Hong Kong style eatery called Cooking Papa. It was packed. The menu choices are insanely diverse, and delicious. Marilyn was completely blown away by the then-and-now difference. One of the reasons for their success is they don't take reservations, so you're almost sure to get a table Real Soon Now. And the available parking is just a little less than the available seats, unless folks seriously carpool, which they sometimes do. When we go there from work, we usually have 6-8 people in Automation Guy's Urban Assault Vehicle.

I took her to the train station, which was recently re-opened after something like 3 years closed for renovation, but it was a huge FAIL job, starting with no place to drop off passengers, and only pay-for Caltrain parking, and no station as such. The model railroad club apparently bought the old station building and all the parking in front is supposedly reserved for their museum. They also did nothing to improve the two Caltrain lots, which seriously need repaving and re-striping and some ticket machines. All the museum spots were taken (the museum was open till 3 today) so I parked in the Caltrain lot and took my chances that we could get Marilyn set up at the Amtrak track, and I'd go back and move the car to a museum spot because one came open as we were walking past it.

Another FAIL is there is no Amtrak signage whatsoever. And no ACE signage. Both of these train lines use the third track farthest from the street, Caltrain uses the two closest. It is a LONG walk down a ramp, through a tunnel and up another ramp. Used to be a short walk across pedestrian crossings over the tracks. The good news is you won't get run over by a train, the bad news is you'll have a heart attack instead.

I parked M in a seat facing the Amtrak track, told her to weait for me, and went back to the car, moved it to a less illegal spot, and when I got back there was a Union Pacific freight car on the track and M was walking with her very heavy roller bag to the far end of the station. I called her on her cell phone and got her back. She didn't understand that the crowd of people she was walking toward was (a) the same crowd of people who had been at the other end when we first got there and (b) they were railroad museum visitors intrigued by the chance of a close-up look at a parked freight train, not passengers.

The Capitol Corridor train came through about 5 minutes late, probably thanks the the UP train, and the conductor let me settle her into a downstairs seat with her luggage, and told her he could sell her a ticket later.

When the train pulled out in 3 minutes, she was not in that seat, or anywhere near a window. Sigh.

Home, because there was something to pick up at the apartment office. I traded them the two packages for a pair of my calendars. The manager was in and thanked me for hers, Laurie the sales rep was out selling so I left one on her desk.

Drove to Mountain View to meet Janice for coffee, Laurie phoned me to say thanks. I've been getting a lot of compliments on the calendar, makes it worth taking the trouble.

Had the usual update session with Janice, and thought about going across the street to see The Hobbit, but I was exhausted, and decided to go home and watch the UW-Boise game on Tivo. But there was an extra MNF football game, and also the Alabama-Georgia game was wrapping up and it looked like it might become an upset, so I watched those instead, and while I was watching they showed the score of the UW game which made me less interested in seeing it.

So I took out two tripods, mounted the flash on one and the camera on the other and set up to take pictures of me & Kaan. That's the Siamese cat's new name. It is an archaic Thai word for tiger, is mostly used to say "the year of the tiger" which is my birth year. And there's the obvious Star Trek reference. The photos were not so good, Kaan mostly kept his eyes closed, the camera was not correctly doing TTL with the slave flash, and autofocus was focusing on whatever the camera was centered on, which usually was not me & the cat. I'll try again later, maybe in a couple of days.

What prompted the photos was a follow up email message from the person at the center who had done the adoption. I answered with a lot of details, including the new name, and some photos Photoshopped down to an email-able size.

Oddly she did not mention receiving my first email message a couple of weeks ago. Hmmm.

Anyhow, here are a couple of my favoritesRead more... )

Plans for tomorrow:

Slept in, had to shut the door on Domino's yelling.

Watched some of the Detroit-Houston game, but shut it off in disgust when the head ref made a game-changing bad call, and compounded the error by refusing to let the play be reviewed. It was a touchdown play, ALL touchdown plays are required to be reviewed. The review refs upstairs failed by not correcting him. This guy was arrogant and wrong, and it cost Detroit the game. I hope he's fired and fined.

Diddled on the computer, refreshing my memory of things to do in the afternoon in Sacramento and Reno. Found some stuff, but not exactly what I was looking for.

Can't remember if I posted about this yesterday, but I went online and bought a "pleather" SF Giants jacket and a world series champ patch to sew onto it. Also bought another internet radio because the standard radio in the kitchen craps out when I turn on any appliance. And it doesn't receive Thai or Seattle programs.

A little after noon I headed over to Eric's, who lives in the apartment-like codos at the same address as Janice's duplex-like condo. Eric is the brother of Logan, who worked with me the two times I was at Kasenna. They are from Corvallis, which means they know all the Pacific Northwet jokes. Both are major league computer geeks, Logan is also a huge fan of alternative music (he used to be a DJ at a Corvallis radio station) and stand-up comedy.

Conversation with Logan while Eric tended the kitchen, which included some catching up (but not much because we see each other from time to time and follow each other on FB). We traded elephant stories, but his included projectile diarrhea, so he wins. Then we inevitably moved on to Tila Tequila and her feud with the Jugalos which are a very rude subset of the Insane Clown Posse's fans. You can read the story here. Unfortunately, the rest of the story is she ODed on prescription meds, which caused a brain aneurysm, and she came out of that partly lobotomized, with paranoid delusions of being persecuted by The Illuminati. Click for videos of her before and after. Very sad. Of course we also chatted about computer stuff - Logan worked for Hotmail when Microsoft bought it, at a similar time to when I worked for the Windows Media group in Redmond.

Eric brought out the food - a wonderful spread. He had made a whole turkey but carved enough for our small gathering, lots of dark meat, stuffing, mashed potatoes and yummy dinner rolls. I passed on the pan fried Brussels sprout halves. Had I not recognized them for what they were I would have tried some, they looked so good. But looks and taste are not always parallel.

Dessert was both pumpkin and apple pie.

At about 4 we were all fading so I took my leave.

Home, watched the Redskins-Cowboys game, which was much better. Lots of scoring on both sides, not a lot of mistakes on either side, and the refs only blew a few calls, none which changed the game, though there was one non-call which would have delayed a touchdown by one or two plays had it been called.

Gave the beast her whipped cream treat and put away the laundry in between games. And ran the dishwasher through another dry cycle, because everything was still damp. I may need to ask Maintenance about that. But first I'm going to enjoy my trip, and call them back to fix the new toilet.

The story about the toilet isRead more... )

The final game was a rout of the Jets by the Patriots. The Jets literally handed over the ball three times for touchdowns. Every now and then the Jets would make a great play, but it wasn't enough to be in the game. It was kind of fun, especially since we have a family rivalry going with some of my NYC family.

Broke out the pistachios for snacking, had some pickled herring and some celery with Onion dip. Domino was very interested in both of those.

At halftime I packed what I needed for the trip except for last minute toiletries & insulin. The Ultrabook in its neoprene sleeve fits perfectly in the laptop sleeve of the day pack which I got as swag from an internet convention. Only taking along a pair of T-shits & undies/sox, the camera with an extra battery and the phone charger. The Kindle will go in the outside front open pocket and meds and Hgl metering stuff in the front zippered pocket. Water bottle goes in a holder on the side. I also packed a folding knapsack Just In Case. I'm planning on making surgical strikes at Sacto & Reno Starbucks (the Sacto one is next door to Amtrak, the Reno one is a bit of a walk) for mugs to add to my collection.

Plans for tomorrow:

Train leaves at 12:50 from SJ Amtrak, I'll drive there by noon in case their free parking lot is full & I need to park in the neighborhood.
Arrive in SAC around 4 pm. Walk a couple of blocks to the hotel, and after check-in walk a few blocks to Old Town for dinner and maybe some entertainment.
Saturday the Reno train is due to leave at about 11 am, and get there just after 4. Then back at 11-ish on the Amtrak-run bus to SAC and train to SJ
