Sometimes. Not always. What makes me think these folks are not is the extraordinary lengths one has to go to to gain access to where they were "hiking".

I understand the "because it's there" syndrome, saw it last weekend all along the coast highway near Big Sur. But the where and when of this particular story goes way beyond that. Most hikers draw the line at going places where they are almost certain to get shot at.

Since most of the Western U.S. is "places we might get shot at", I disagree with your premise on that point. But it's still clear you're not a hiker.

I'm with "yourbob." As a hiker, I would love to hike enticing places. National boundaries are arbitrary.

Besides, unless the suspect is caught with a knife dripping with blood and even then, they are still just "alleged murderer" until proven guilty :-)

Iran doesn't share our democratic legal principals. The question is, would you go to the trouble of traveling to the Iran-Iraq border just to hike?
