Honolulu Ideas?
Mar. 28th, 2008 04:07 pmA friend is taking his 80-something parents to Honolulu for a family vacation. They are from central Oregon and do not particularly like hanging out on the beach (I know, it's insane, but there you have it). I have never been there, so I'm asking the great hive mind for suggestions I can pass along to him of things to do on the Big Island which are accessible (we're talking walkers here) and possibly interesting inland.

For the Missus there is always shopping. If they are staying near or on the beach (just because the hotels are there), there are some nice tourist shops in that neck of the woods.
Pearl Harbor - A Must. Takes most of a day to do it right. Several tours and things to go visit.
The Bishop Museum is a Must. Also can take most of a day. They have a planetarium and lots of neat stuff.
Iolani Palace (where the King and Queen lived). Very Interesting.
Plantation Village - Friends have found it interesting. But I haven't been.
If they are actually going to Hawaii the island, then definitely anything to do with the volcanos, but it will take a day or more to see things properly (depending on where they are driving from).
It they love telescopes then Mauna Kea - where the telescopes live - is interesting. But they need to plan ahead and rent a car for that. Although you can't go to the top without a guide, they do small telescope viewing from the observation station.
Also one of the Hiltons on the Big Island has a dolphin experience. Expensive but fun.
